Stern Assembly - Set for Growth!

Stern Assembly, located in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, is a manufacturer of custom roto molded plastic parts, components and assemblies. The Hoyt Lakes operation was added in 2018 as an expansion to Stern Companies located in Baxter and Brainerd, MN. Stern has been in business for over 25 years. The Stern businesses provide rotational molding, thermoforming and assembly services, along with brokerage services for all other rubber and plastic manufacturing, including injection molding, blow molding, die cutting, extrusions and more.

Stern manufactures rubber and plastic components for companies such as Arctic Cat, ASV, Brunswick, Geringhoff, Nilfisk, Polaris, Terex, Textron, Toro and many others at its facilities in Brainerd. Many of the products are used in the agriculture, commercial cleaning, and restaurant industry, as well as recreational industry.

Stern is a 22M plus company and growing steadily. In January 2021 Stern acquired another plastics manufacturing facility in Maple Plain, MN, which will add to our growth. “This expansion will help Stern meet existing demand from customers ranging from Fortune 500 companies to local regional manufacturers as well as new business” said Shawn Hunstad, the owner of Stern companies who has been instrumental in Stern’s ongoing growth, acquisitions, and success.

In the Hoyt Lakes plant we not only produce many different roto molded parts for Boss Plow, ASV and others, but we also have a thermos-forming operation along with fiber glassing capability. At this time the primary product that produced is for Crestliner boat consoles; it is thermo-formed and then fiberglassed for reinforcement. We are having a challenging time keeping up with demand and need to add more employees to our operation, not only in Hoyt Lakes, but also in the Brainerd and Maple Plain facilities.

I started with Stern in January of 2020. My background was primarily in the precision metal industry, so it was not only a change but an education in the plastics field. It was a good move to a growth company and it has been fun! When I started we had one shift with nine employees. We are currently running three shifts with 21 employees but we need to add more on all shifts, along with a few support people. We have more than enough work to run our capacity full out, and have actually turned down work because of being at or over capacity.

We have 11 rotational machines, with two of the newest state-of-the-art pieces of equipment at the Hoyt Lakes facility. Still, with all the variables to control in the world of plastics and to provide a consistent quality product to our customers, the experience of our people is our greatest asset. All three of our manufacturing locations are recruiting more people for growth. We look forward to a good year in 2021 for manufacturing and being on the path for record setting sales this year.
